Top 5 Reasons to Read Until We Meet Again by Lily Kim Qian

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Until We Meet Again by Lily Kim Qian! A story about losing yourself between cultures, families, homes and finding your way back through art.

Book: Until We Meet Again
Genre: Memoir, Graphic Novel
Publishing Date: April 21, 2026

Rep: Chinese, AAPI, Depression

Synopsis

A poignant and vividly illustrated graphic memoir about a young woman's search for belonging as her immigrant family moves between Canada and China.

Lily isn't sure where home is anymore. Her family is constantly on the move, resettling in different towns across Canada and, eventually, in Shanghai, China. Her father serves as the primary caregiver while her mother is absent for long periods. When she reappears, her strange behaviour turns Lily's life upside down. As Lily enters college, she strives to better understand her family and her place in the world. But can she escape the inherited trauma passed down by her immigrant parents?

Let me give you 5 reasons you absolutely need to add this to your TBR:

1. The art will stop you in your tracks

This isn't your average graphic novel. Lily Kim Qian's illustrations are bold, expressive, and sometimes abstract in the best way, the kind you linger on before turning the page. The colour choices alone tell a whole emotional story without a single word.

2. It will make you feel less alone

If you grew up in a chaotic household, moved around a lot, or watched a parent struggle, this book will reach right into your chest. Lily doesn't sugarcoat her childhood, and that honesty is exactly what makes it so comforting to read.

3. It's a story about identity that actually goes deep

Being caught between cultures, languages, and places is something so many people live but rarely see reflected back at them. This memoir doesn't just skim the surface; it sits with the messiness of not knowing where you belong.

4. You'll see mental illness through a child's eyes

There are no clinical explanations here, just a little girl watching her mother slowly become someone she doesn't recognize. That perspective is raw, confusing, and heartbreaking in a way that stays with you long after you finish.

5. It's ultimately a story about getting back up

For all its heavy moments, this book doesn't leave you in the dark. Lily finds her footing through art, therapy, and hard-won self-awareness and watching that journey unfold makes the whole read feel worth it.
